Stories that Ground Us
Location: Shexian, China
Time: 2020
This resident project is located at the Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall in Zheng Village, She County, Anhui Province, organized by Pan Shanghai. As an architect, the creation adopted three design strategies: firstly, responding to the dual roles played by ancestral halls in terms of clan worship and grain storage in history; Secondly, utilizing the opening and closing of existing architectural elements (doors) to achieve spatial performance; Thirdly, create a central device as a fulcrum for stage action. The application of theatrical techniques has been integrated into the creation. When the door of the temple, which had been covered in dust for many years, was opened again, it was not only a virtual theatrical performance, but also a real gathering of villagers and a reconnection with the temple. The theater recreates rural life.
